The World of Nathalie Decoster, sculptor
She plays with stress and obsessions of the modern man placing her sculptures like seeds to fertilize minds, offer a meditative break inciting to pick up the now moment. Based in Aubervilliers in a former factory, Nathalie Decoster melts her “little guys » in bronze close to the towers of La Défense. Starting June 3rd and during the summer, Saint-Paul de Vence will expose a monumental work entitled “Concrete” in the middle of a concrete block, a character walking, symbolizing the energy of men sometimes capable of moving mountains . « Question of Willingness” she said.
There in the sculptures of Nathalie Decoster boundless, positive energy, this same energy that exudes the character when we see, listen to her, with her beautiful lioness mane and piercing eyes.
Nathalie Decoster goes forward, and looks ahead such as her character walking in the wheel of time with a step -of course giant and sure-. France, China, Brazil, the UAE, London, Lebanon … “The passage of time” travels the roads and nothing can stop it. More than confinement, this circle, this wheel -in which the character a bit like walking a hamster- rather embodies the positive vision of a a human being who, caught in the cycle of life and death, no doubt, because it’s not the destination that counts but the way. The theme is deep but the formal treatment overflowing with joy and hope.
The body of her characters full of life and movement, balance, vitality. Her character, she calls “little man” is her faithful messenger.
Besides, he never leaves her, clinging to her bronze medallion neck, the same metal as her monumental sculptures. The artist loves to watch the relationship between her sculptures with the landscape, nature, mountains, cities. The environment becomes part of the work, inseparable, as if each work should always inevitably find its rightful place. Proof that her philosophical approach to the human condition, is truly universal! She likes to wear a worker jumpsuit, sometimes white, sometimes bright orange, which refers to prisoners of the US prison in Cuba Guantanmo, or of Abbahu Ghraib in Iraq, a nod to the human condition locked in a body before being betweens walls or a wheel. “The real story? The white is a combination of worker whose numerous traces tell working hours. The orange comes from Shanghai I bought in a market where farmers campaigns who seek work in the city are acquiring used clothing for a symbolic penny. When I put on my suit, I transpose myself into an artist’s skin, which comes in a bubble and instantly goes to work. ”
Nathalie Decoster has her studio in an old factory in Aubervilliers, behind La Défense. A workplace converted into a living space, the door is always open for visitors.
An industrial décor, raw materials, concrete metal, artworks, dresses on a hanger on the wall, and a wood stove in each room, for warmth. She loves hijacked furniture, objects that have lived. In the kitchen, almost professional, two tables and chairs, wooden and metal play hot and cold, contradictory sensations. Like her character, both solitary and gregarious, friendly and serious, with lightness.
On the working side, upstream, she locks herself in her studio sheltered from the whirlwind of modern life …
When she is not working her themes in a structured way, what she does most often, she sometimes engages in what she calls “impulse”, a way to create lightness from ideas that burst “as evidence,” she says. “These ideas come when I am in a” semi-conscious “state. This is so for me an indescribable pleasure to indulge in these “spontaneous sculptures” to the result that also surprises myself! “. During the production phase, she receives her bronze founder for weekly meetings on technical aspects, underway parts -according to the technique of lost-wax and relatives teams for logistics exhibitions, or research new work processes, new materials. “If the moments of solitude are essential, sharing is something essential in life,” she says!
From this vast hangar with interconnecting spaces, little guys, once polished, escape to areas of freedom, cities, buildings, or natural sites of extraordinary beauty: the Rochebrune and Mont d’Arbois in Megève, the hills of the Basque Country Ostapé, the Abbey gardens of Celle in the Var, the castle Bonaguil in the Lot-et-Garonne … till in the idyllic setting of Lake Como in Italy .
Since spring and until the end of the summer, the Hôtel Villa Lario offers an extraordinarily refined backdrop to the sculptures of Nathalie Decoster through a monographic course of monumental works.
From the top of the mountain until the lake, old houses have been restored with a contemporary and minimalist biases in interior design favoring the view of the lake. Between sky and water, in the gardens of the villa, from the infinity pool blending with the lake, through the garden of the mansion with Italian balustrade, in the shade of palm trees or cedars, inside each suite, a different and secret work can be discovered. This place of great beauty can address these works on the human condition in the tranquility. In autumn, the works will travel to other places, but not without achieving their benefits and delivering their access codes to serenity.
