The Suitcase of Sarah Lavoine

Text by Sandra Serpero

Currently under the spotlight with the inauguration of the new Maison du Printemps space where she left her remarkable signature, the most Parisian interior designer who has three boutiques of her own name in the capital, is successfully following her path. We met with this decoration enthusiast that plays with lines and colors and draws inspiration from travelling

Duffel bag, weekend bag, trunk, suitcase, or no bag at all?
I’m a Rimowa person, I have a suitcase in every size! Depending on the length of my trip, I adapt the size. I also have a trunk from this brand that I love

Globe-trotter or virtual traveller?
I have always been a globe-trotter. I love traveling, discovering new places and new cultures

Are you a beach or city person?
Both! In fact I like the beach when there is something to do around it like in Bali where I can visit a temple, see a wicker manufacturer … Only the beach like in the Maldives for example, I find it boring

What are your favorite destinations and hotels?
The Mercer Hotel in New York is in the heart of Soho, a neighborhood that I love. New York is an addictive city that I can not live without. The Legian Bali is a resplendent place set amidst beautiful tropical gardens. The Amanjena Hotel in Marrakech, an oasis of serenity close to the Medina. And recently, Japan a country for which I had a real love at first sight. Tokyo is a fascinating and truly exotic city

A destination with the children?
The mountains without any doubt, we are a family of skiers. We stay very often at the Hotel Blizzard in Val d’Isere

What do you bring home from your travels?
Very often decorative objects and samples that inspire me for my work. A few clothes and never food

What would be your definition of a perfect trip?
The ideal journey is in good company, under the sun and the heat. A couple of weeks ago, I went with my girlfriends on a weekend trip in Venice: it was perfect!

What is your first travel memory?
Kenya with my father and sister, when I was 8 years old. I remember this feeling of freedom, the beauty of the landscapes and the happiness of seeing so many animals

Your last trip?
A family safari trip in South Africa : magical!

The tips

To prepare my suitcase, I arrange all my clothes flat, it is the best way to save space.
I always have a handbag with jogging pants inside that I put on as soon as I get on the plane to be comfortable.
I hydrate my face skin several times on the plane.
I immediately set my watch at the time of the country to which I am going.
I do not think about jet lag, so I never feel jet lagged!
I always have a shawl with me when I travel, even if I go to a hot country.
