The World of MARIE GAS: The art of choosing
Marie Gas created ByMarie, a fashion concept store composed of an eshop and four boutiques between Paris and the South of France. She became a reference in terms of style and trends, for her talent in finding rare pieces or designers in the making. She hunts for them during her travels from New York to Saint-Ouen, and cultivates the art of holidays without ever ceasing to sharpen her choices!
The decor is set. Nearly every morning, when she is not travelling, Marie Gas is crossing the Seine through the Pont des Arts. She leaves her apartment, a cozy cocoon in the heart of Saint-Germain des Prés to go to her office, rue Etienne Marcel.
Passing by the bridge is for her, both a way of travelling and a rendez-vous with Paris that still amazes her. This ritual, moreover, could summarize her life-long mission : to create a bridge between Art, which inspires her, and everyday life.
Marie Gas has created around her a world of softness, calmness and beauty that we can feel every time we go to one of her shops, by Marie. The display racks are color changers where she creates her ranges of colors. Her life is choosing, selecting, bringing to the surface and assembling objects, accessories, timeless pieces in line with trends, without any fuss, with simplicity and refinement. Once discovered, these “gems” take place in the space that she arranges: white walls, natural wood, touches of ceramics and metal … a soothing place.
In her suitcase, she brings alongs the South of France, Saint-Tropez, Marseille, where she spent her childhood and naturally implanted two shops. From this solar story, she creates summer even during winter in her two Parisian shops and on her eshop, a permanent invitation to travel where each object, selected in the selection, embodies the essence.
This desire for an elsewhere, she sees it, elicits it, and intensely plays on it: “ByMarie’s main theme, she says, is to offer collections of a designer who have strong identities, desirable pieces behind which are hidden wonderful encounters with their designer. The driving force behind this desire is of course the experience behind the object: an experience, a privileged moment, a world of creation, a quality, an encounter that Mary aims to share. Thus she collects moments of desire, brings them together in a gem case, and leaves tirelessly in search of new desires, new fragments to experience and share.
She hunts wherever she goes, on Sunday in Grimaud, on Saturday in Saint-Ouen and especially in New York, where it all began. “I spent a lot of time in New York. I pretend to feel at home in this city. She has her own habits there. She takes a coffee downtown, at the Bowery Hotel for example.
It is in New York that she came along her father, André Gas, founder of jewelry brand Gas, that the young lawyer felt in love with bohemian clothes, brought back to Paris. This act, at once an accident and a revelation, brought a change of plan. “It was obvious,” she said. “ByMarie, is a bias, a vision. And to be faithful to this vision, we must keep tracks. It’s a lot of work, a call to order, a requirement. I select. I’m not a bulimic. We do not have time to see everything. ” At this rate, Marie Gas has the feeling to express more an artistic sense than the sense of commerce. “Art and architecture do me good! “She says. And she adds: “I am lucky to still have a lot of sincerity.” In addition, Artistic Director of the Gas jewelery brand, she creates each year a micro collection signed “ByMarie collection”: some cashmere in winter, silk kimonos or kaftans in summer.
At the beginning of December in Marseille, she imagined an event, a privileged encounter with one of her favorite designers, Edwina de Charrette de La Contrie, founder of the eponymous LaContrie brand, specializing in half-size leather goods. The designer will customize the bags of her new line made of goat leather from a choice of color skins and matching cords. It will be about meeting, pleasure, choice and unique objects. Thank you Mary!
