“The golden age of painting in Naples, from Ribera to Giordano” at the musee Fabre, Montpellier.
From the arrival of Caravaggio in 1606 until the triomphe of Solimena shortly before 1700, neopolitan painting has evolved from expressionist and tragic naturalism, to a baroque and sensual taste for colour and movement.
Religious and mythological topics, battles, still life and landscapes all reflect the fruitfulness and the imaginaiton of neapolitan painters, the most influential of whom can be discovered here. Through numerous french and foreign loans, this exhibition offers a vast window into one of the shining eras of italian art.
