“Joseph Koudelka, Nationality Doubtful” at Fondation Mapfre, Madrid.
Joseph Koudelka, who was originally trained as an engineer, started his photography career in the mid 1960s and is one of the most influential photographers of his generation.
His work, which is midway between art and documentary, has made of him a living legend. This selection of more than 150 pieces by the french-nationalied Czech photographer covers his entire trajectory, covering his first experimental projects created in the late 1950s and 1960s, his historical series Gypsies, Invasion and Exiles, and his major panoramic landscapes of more recent years. The title of the exhibition depicts a sense of a missing homeland and a sense of uprooting which has been a feature of his work since his exile from Czechoslovakia following the Soviet invasion of Prague. The collection is also a reflection of his constant interest in regions in conflict.
Until 29th of November. B.D. www.fundacionmapfre.org
