For a quick relaxing escape until the christmas festivities, let’s program a getaway for two or more. Just to see the countryside, to enjoy the last rays to jogger in nature and be hosted like a real family holiday. In even better.
In terms of lifestyle, Beatrice Monnier and Bernard Coloma have no lesson to learn. Having orchestrated for 5 years what makes the Murtoli Domain today, in Corsica, an exceptional and unique experience of its kind, it has nevertheless been necessary to renew itself. And find this time, on their behalf, a refuge to match their requirements. Love at first sight was immediate and the opportunity too good: an artists house facing the Alpilles! Just think … An old farmhouse from the seventeenth century, turned into a house where creation was queen. Result? One can still admire the sublime color mosaics of the painter Roger Dezombes, friend of Paul Gaugin. For the rest, design alongside the old stones. The colors collide and everything dresses this old house with a beautiful freshness.
What room ? The orange suite, for its size – you can stay with two children – and its direct access to the park.
What we like: The gardens in terraces, facing the Alpilles and the very arty and different decor in each suite.
What we love: the pigeons house converted into a pocket-handkerchief spa.
What makes the difference: the guest table and the faultless wine selection by Alice – a graduate of the hotel school in Lausanne – who loves to share small discoveries of her terroir.
Good to know: bicycles are available for exploring the surrounding area, a petanque field invites to ‘pointer’ at the cocktail hour …
What to do around? We meet the winemakers, and bring back one of the best olive AOC oils purchased at a domain and (re) discover the Baux de Provence, the day after Saint-Remy, without the summer hordes.
From € 190 the double room. 18 km from Avignon train station and 70 km from Marseille airport. www.mas-amarine.com
Anne? This is Anne Gerber, who transformed her beautiful family house in Colombage, surrounded by a small cottage, a park and an orchard into a guesthouse, the most beautiful among the district of Robertsau. A gem in the city! Inside, instead of yielding to any clean design, Anne chose a contemporary, opulent décor to support beams. The carpet is of three layers, the walls are sometimes gold and bathtubs, as bulging as huge ostrich eggs invite to laziness.
What room ? The bouton d’Or bedroom. For its bourgeois atmosphere, with sewed painted paper, silky fabrics and king size bath tub.
What we like: the table of the chef Anthony, renowned throughout the whole city. Very nice menu.
What we love: the terrace, the garden … a real exotic and picturesque setting close to the city center.
What makes the difference: the tea Time hour! With a snack worth one of the finest locations in the mountains. Pancakes, jams, buns, cakes, pastries … watch out, it’s serious.
What to do around? Right away, you can enjoy the still-green Alsatian countryside to visit the cellars and some nice villages or pedestrians, we walk around the whole weekend in the city amid the canals and half-timbered houses. Later, the Christmas markets with children is a must-go!
From € 295 double room. 10 minutes from downtown.www.du-cote-de-chez-anne.com
This ancient fortified farm from the sixteenth century was the home of poet, photographer and archaeologist Ulysse Dumas. Transformed with its silk farm into a guesthouse in 2009, it is today one of the most beautiful stops surrounding the Pont du Gard. Faithful to the Camargue spirit, high in colors, Guy and Gauthier know how to surprise us, using the contrasts between old patinas and arty pieces. As true lovers of Provence, they grew all emblematic species of the region in their extraordinary garden, typically Mediterranean. An atypical place.
What room ? The Belle du Seigneur suite, in the oldest part of the property, with French ceiling, fireplace and … voutins or in family, the Ecume des jours suite, a huge mezzanine loft with a view of the countryside .
What we like: the power breakfast, with local cheeses, cold meats, smoked salmon. A beautiful start of the day for lovers.
What we love: the traditional hammam, scented with eucalyptus.
Good to know: the heated pool until late October.
What to do around? We walk to Uzès, we go to the local market – a reference of its kind – before getting lost in the vineyards of the Baron region.
From 195 € the double room. 45 minutes from Avignon train station, 40 minutes from Nîmes airport and one hour from Montpellier airport. www.lamaisondulysse.com
