Whilst the media attention is focused on the short list of establishments who recently achieved “palace” status, the real debate seems to be focused elsewhere : is it not more paramount to reward those who aim for modernity ? Those who combine luxury with total perfection ? Here we take a brief look at these made-to-measure initiatives.


A luxury boat from the Plaza-Athénée
It’s new ! In order to explore the Seine, the Plaza-Athénée has recently acquired a magnificent new mahogany and chrome boat that is available for private rent. After a world tour with his concept “Hair Room Service Around the World” John Nollet, hairdresser to the stars, has established himself on rue de la Paix with his custom made Louis Vuitton trunks. Multicultural gastronomy at the Shangri-La Paris
Since it’s opening in mid-December 2010, this brand new Parisian hotel has focused on its haute cuisine. Whether it be French or Asian. As well as the Le Bauhinia restaurant, there is the L’Abeille dining room, which recently opened, under the direction of chef Philippe Labbé. Set to launch this summer is the Shang Palace. Le bristol

Le Bristol dances to the samba
The extensive restoration works of the establishment just completed, Le Bristol has been given the title of “palace” for the quality of its service. To celebrate their accession into this very exclusive circle of excellence, the hotel is organising, on the June 15th, a big Brazilian party in their garden. Pascal Havel, the chief barman, is offering a variety of cocktails including the traditional caïpirinha. For their part, the little ones can participate in the drawing competition held until August 31st, 2011 to celebrate the first birthday of Burma’s Persian kitten Fa-raon, the mascot of the hotel. www.lebristolparis.com
