THE AVANT GARDE OF FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY IN HYERES
At the forefront of trends, eclectic and challenging, the International Fashion and Photography Festival will hold its 32nd edition in Hyères from April 27th to May 1st, extending its exhibitions until May 28th. In parallel to the awards that will appoint young stylists or accessories designer, this selection seems to be particularly exciting for photography.
This year, the Photography Prize jury presidence is awarded to the British photographer Tim Walker, a whimsical photography artist, curator in 2008 of the 39th Rencontres d’Arles, who turns the pages of Vogue into wonderful tales where the models become fairies. With few passion about high-tech, he creates dream-like universes by focusing on natural light and reality, with spectacular staging without retouching. Out of 750 applications received, ten finalists are competing for various prizes: the prize winner at the end of the festival will receive an endowment of 15,000 euros offered by La Maison CHANEL.
This year, the American Vintage Photography Prize will reward one of the finalists with an equivalent endowment, while the Elie Saab couture house will offer one of the photographer a 6,000 euros creation grant and a three-week artistic residence in Lebanon to create a series on Beirut.
The festival aims to produce new forums of dialogue between young creatives and fashion professionals of any nationality. The styles of the ten finalist photographers are very mixed, even if we note a particular research on shape and movement, for example by Nancy Newberry (USA), Roos Quaternaat (Netherlands), or Luis Alberto Rodrigues (USA /Sweden). The clothing becomes a material, a color, a plastic element within the framework of a formal composition where fashion is concealed.
