The World of Vuarnet
THE RETURN OF THE FRENCH EYEWEAR
Nobody has forgotten the first ever pair of Vuarnets. The ultimate winter sport accessory during the mid-eighties. After the swinging sixties, they make their return with Matthias Schoenaerts in the biopic La Piscine. And why not take the opportunity to remember Vuarnets are without a doubt the best sunglasses in the world?
Renaissance becomes a myth.
1969, Alain Delon, Romy Schneyder. La Piscine. This cult film represents ultimate seduction and a single accessory: a pair of 006 Vuarnets, with the famous semi-shaded mirror to deflect blinding sunshine rays and their glare. Almost fifty years on, in the 2015 version of the film, this product has not been forgotten. This means the 006, which remains loyal to its original shape and characteristics.
Every legend has a history…
And solid technology. The story begins in 1957 in Paris in the atelier of Roger Pouilloux. A skiing enthusiast, this optician would revolutionize his intimate world by creating a lens capable of both protecting his eyes on the piste and optimal vision during bad weather. Christened “Skilynx”, today this lens still offers unrivaled precision, made from natural mineral glass. It represents comfortable vision and ultimate resolution, disproportionate with its plastic (organic) materials used by the majority of brands.
Re-reaching the summit.
Only two years later in 1959, the path of Roger Pouilloux crossed that of skier Jean Vuarnet, who first suggested the “egg position” (which would become a reference for gathering speed). As an admirer, Pouilloux bequeathed to the athlete a pair of 002 with Skilnyx glass and yellow – previously unseen – lenses to improve visual contrasts and fight against the ‘white-out’ effect. Thus, Jean Vuarnet evaded all traps of the Squaw Valley piste in California and won a gold medal in downhill skiing at the 1960 Olympic Games.
Vuarnet, a French House.
A friendship blossomed and for the first time, a spectacle brand was named after a sportsman! Even today, Vuarnet is the only label to produce its own mineral lenses in its factory in Meaux, assuring the existence of a unique savoir-faire and entirely handcrafted production. The making of a pair of Vuarnet glasses requires at least a week of work and 17 steps of validation during its creation.
