The World of Charlie
The idea is simple. Obvious. Bright. Yet it was not until May 2016 that the first museum dedicated to the revolutionary and timeless work of Charlie Chaplin opened! And it is in Switzerland, where he ended his days, that the Chaplin’s World unique in the world has just been inaugurated. Follow us in the footsteps of the first mega movie star in history, some guy named Charlot who invented everything or almost …
Chaplin’s World: in the privacy of Charlot
In 2008, some of the descendants of Charlie Chaplin always resided in the Manoir de Ban, located on the small town of Corsier-sur-Vevey in the canton of Vaud, near Lake Geneva. Today, the homestead is visited and joined the Chaplin’s World designed by teams from the Grevin. First observation, more than a house, it is a big mansion, modest in comparison to the will of its owner, the world-famous star and first real movie star, a guy names Charles Spencer Chaplin. It must be said that the patriarch habitat these places with his large family from 1952 until his death in 1977, was already a near-retiree of 63 years leaving behind the frenzy of her Hollywood life. Expelled from the United States at the height of McCarthyism, he found refuge in this Swiss paradise he had fallen in love. Chaplin’s World thus opens the doors of his house furnished as if it had just left the room. This is the Charlot intimate life one discovers. But the visit begins in the Studio, a modern building specifically built to trace the career of the Kid. We pass under a cinema screen retracing his greatest roles to survey a typical street in the early century America in which he began his career in a small gaggle of silent films. Chaplin became a super star in the US between 1915 and 1920, at a time when no less than 50 million spectators crowded every week in theaters! The poor little boy soon became London’s multi millionaire in Hollywood. And the whole point of this Chaplin’s World is to make us better know this dazzling career. Multiple scenes of his films are reconstituted. We can touch everything, everywhere, this “museum” is very interactive. It reveals an actor over the lot. But also an inspired humanist writer. A film technician who loved realize himself taking an image. In short, a creative genius that marked the 20th century with a handful of films that are about the bill and surprisingly modern. Chaplin’s World to discover as the movie than their father and husband in the privacy of his home. A success that deserves all who love Charlot take the train to Switzerland. And god knows they are legions to cherish the memory of a little tramp born on film … there’s already a century!
When Vevey cultivates the memory of Chaplin …
Chaplin spent the last quarter century of his life in Vevey. Inevitably, this leaves traces. The pretty little town cultivates the memory of the presence of him that everyone knew as a little eccentric old man who was a movie star. His statue on the shores of Lake Geneva still causes much of selfies. The small cemetery where he rests houses a modest but still ornate tomb. We go buy a box of Charlie’s shoes at the Läderach chocolate house which is the only authorized to sell chocolate in the shape of the famous clogs Charlot. Chaplin’s three main traits of character are used to cook this unique chocolate: originality for pine nuts, romanticism he displayed in his films for the caramel and harshness of his character for use of a bitter dark chocolate a bit … the whole story! Past the Rex cinema, spare a thought for Charlot who came there to view the latest movies to fashion. Finally, to sleep with Chaplin, the new hotel management Modern Times recently opened near the museum. A contemporary setting where Charlot is present everywhere in small touches, as the coffee cups, and walls. Chaplin’s world, it is that there is always Vevey, far from a Hollywood that has allowed him to conquer the planet …
