Spring is coming and exhibitions are multiplying in March. Towards Pont-Aven to see three generations of Rouart, Madrid for the work of Wyeth, father and son, then head to the north of Europe to get interested in the witches with Brueguel in Bruges and the work of Jérôme Bosch in’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. And also a world tour from Amsterdam to discover the work of Japanese style by Breitner, to Australia for the Art Biennale, via Brussels with Sarkis and Paris to discover shamans of pre-Columbian Ecuador.   • "The Rouart, from impressionism to realism" at the Pont-Aven museum.

    To celebrate the reopening of its doors, the Museum of Pont-Aven is presenting a major exhibition devoted to the Rouart family.

    The artistic saga of the Rouart family comes in different names on three successive generations of artists. While it is rare to see such consistency over time, it is even more unusual to witness the blossoming of talent as distinct under the same name. Rouart Henry, who joined the circle of the Impressionists in 1874, could through his personal fortune finance contemporary artists and thus constitute an exceptional collection, dispersed in 1912. His son Ernest, only pupil of Degas, will pass from water -strong to a more “balthusienne” tone. As for Augustin Rouart, nephew of Ernest, if his inspiration comes first in a classical tradition and under the influence of Maurice Denis, his style is primarily a reflection of “magical realism”, when abstraction is required. This exhibition traces over a hundred years of creation and history of modern art through the Rouart family.

  • "Wyeth Andrew and Jamie in the Studio" at the Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid.

    For the first retrospective in Europe dedicated to Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) and his son Jamie (born in 1946), two major representatives of American realism in the twentieth century, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum has partnered with the Denver Art Museum to bring together more than sixty works from around the world, including some works never exhibited before.

    The exhibition helps to understand how the work of father and son running in parallel are both complementary or in competition. With their sense of the theatrical, black humor and technical experimentation, Wyeth shared the same sensibility.

  • "The Witches of Bruegel" at the Sint-Janhispitaal, Bruges.

    The Sint-Janshospitaal of Bruges is devoting a great exhibition dedicated to the witch imagery.

    If everyone knows how it is presented – an ugly old woman with a broom to fly through the chimney – who is preparing potions in large pots under the evil eye of a black cat, we are often unaware that this is Pieter Bruegel the Elder who first conceived this representation. The world of witchcraft is exposed in the medieval granary of the former Saint-Jean hospital and it is explained how witch hunts were organized, the powers attributed to them and their magical rituals in Bruges and around.

  • "Jérôme Bosch - Engineering Visions" at the Het Noordbrabants Museum, 's-Hertogenbosch

    To mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Jérôme Bosch, the Noordbrabants Museum is presenting a major international exhibition dedicated to the artist.

    With twenty paintings (triptychs and panels) and as many drawings, it is the most comprehensive exhibition of Bosch’s works ever held to date. It is an unprecedented tribute to the most important medieval artist that the Netherlands have experienced: never before so many works of the “creator of demons” had been gathered. Most of his work comes only once in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, hometown of the artist, whose real name is Jeroen van Aken, where were carried his masterpieces and from which he borrowed the name (Bosch) .

  • "Breitner - Girl in Kimono » at the Riksmuseum, Amsterdam.

    Countless versions of a girl in a kimono, a symbol of Japanese art, emerged in the work of George Hendrik Breitner between 1893 and 1896.

    The young model woman who posed for almost all painting have thus been immortalized. Based on new research, the exhibition presents for the first time the complete series as well as an unknown fabric, from a private collection. Besides the paintings, drawings, sketches and photographs used by the artist for the preparation of his work are also presented.

  • "Sarkis - Il Grido" at the Galerie Nathalie Obadia, Brussels.

    Sarkis started art with "The Scream", in his own words. His meeting with Edvard Munch was during his teen years.

    While the young man was torning magazine pages to wrap his butcher dad’s meat, he came across a reproduction of the famous painting. A shock for this Istanbul kid who had never seen a painting. Six decades later, the exhibition expresses the recognition of the Armenian artist to the Norwegian painter and shows the importance and the power of images, such as icons, in the creative world of Sarkis.

  • "Magic Object" at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide.

    As part of the Biennial of Australian Art 2016 Magic Object provides a space for free associations and the emergence of ideas are made possible by the interaction between artists and audience.

    The interests of creators in the “talismanic” cultural rituals and physical puzzles are delighting. However, this enchantment is not without caution. The “Wundekammer” proposed as a tool through which we can watch the world but also criticize it.

  • "Shamans and gods of pre-Columbian Ecuador" at the Quai Branly Museum, Paris

    Both traditions messenger, priest, healer, astronomer, hunter and until its transformation into temporal deity, the shaman has the power of the sacred animals and personifies the forces of the other world.

    The exhibition features through 265 works the peak of this practice that combines mysticism and interpretation of climatic and cosmic phenomena, mythology and social rites. The pectoral ornaments, necklaces, gold bracelets alongside representations of animals and mythical creatures, combining the different species and their principles.
