"LaToya Ruby Frazier - Performing social Landscapes" at the CAPC, Bordeaux.

LaToya Ruby Frazier, Momme Silhouettes, Notion of Family. c’est maintenant Mai 2016 PLUMEVOYAGE @plumevoyagemagazine Courtesy the artist and Michel Rein, Paris-Brussels

The photos of LaToya Ruby Frazier are about her hometown, Braddock, in Pennsylvania, or more accurately the people of this city. It is the working class suburb of Pittsburgh where was located a large steel mill. For several years, she has been working on her family by taking them as witnesses of the economic crisis. Her work is part of a long line of engaged photographers such as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans and Gordon Parks. In this exhibition, she looks at three generations of women: her grandmother, mother and the artist herself through self-portraits. Beyond the framework of documentary photography, LaToya Ruby Frazier creates complex compositions that use multiple frames and put into abyss thanks to the performative gesture.
