"European Ghosts" at Mu.ZEE | Oostende.

Maurice Tabard © Photo Centre Pompidou

How does the West perceive 20th-century African art?

This is the question tackled by this exhibition by trying to forget how exotic and colonialist ideas stick to these creations, often regarded as primitive art, negro art or even ethnic art. More than a century after Guillaume Apollinaire’s plea On the Walls, where he asked the Louvre to accept “works of exotic art”, where are we now? Across several opening photos, objects and masks, you are invited to make your own judgment, far from the easy clichés and by taking account of politicians who have often mislead this continent.
Until 3rd January.
