Strolling at the Château de Courban

By Béatrice Delamotte

This is no longer the Champagne region and not quite Burgundy yet. But the area is beautiful, adorned with warm colors of an endless Indian summer. To enjoy long walks, visits to vineyards or just for a luxury break, the Château de Courban is the perfect halt.

  • Just like home, with the heart

Nestled in the heart of a small quiet village, the Château de Courban is primarily the story of a family passion. It all began in 1998. Pierre Vandenriessche, an entrepreneur from Lille, falls for a beautiful building of the nineteenth century. Over the years, he will transform it from a hunting lodge into a cozy four-star hotel where now work his two son, Jérôme and Frédéric. Many renovations that have preserved the charm of the place, like a family home in which we want to return to. “We want our guests to feel just like home, away from home,” explains Frédéric Vandenriessche. “With the heart!”

  • Each of the twenty five guest rooms has its own character. Pierre Vandenriessche wanted to deal himself with the decoration favoring the broken tones, preserving the space and brightness of the rooms. Either we prefer one of the rooms of the main house, welcoming and cozy, or one of the various annexes that are scattered in the park, the pleasure is the same. The suitcase barely on the floor, you feel at home. And to coo of pleasure, nothing like opting for the sixteenth century dovecote. Completely redesigned with a contemporary twist, it is good to relax by counting the original niches unless you prefer taking a face-to-face duo bath in the double footed bathtubs.

  • Fire and sweets to extend the experience

After a day pounding the surrounding vineyards, a step at the Nuxe spa and before a gourmet dinner, let yourself sit in the deep lounges sofas of the bighouse. In front of a comforting fireplace, this is the perfect time to enjoy a glass of champagne or wine from Burgundy. With any luck, Sushi, the cat of the house will come visit you. The evening keeps going at La Table du Colombier, the gourmet restaurant of the Château. Here, this is Takashi Kinoshita’s field. The Japanese chef, who went through the kitchens of the Elysées and many starred restaurants, offers a cuisine that mixes great French tradition, Japanese art of display and a dash of creativity. Nothing is heavy, everything is delicate, brilliantly executed, even the game that he manages to transform into an incredible taste experience.
