Françoise Spiekermeier

What a long way from the photoshoot sessions in the great artist’s studio of the 17th arrondissement, when she was still a little girl.

  • Already, her father, the great fashion photographer Jean-Loup Sieff, did not resist the urge to grasp her clear eyes, her rebellious pout and her presence in front of the objective of his studio settled under the glass roof, in this family apartment. On a black background, a simple cube covered with a black velvet, and the body was revealed in all its assumption. This simplicity, so difficult to attain, this ontological acuity which made the signature of the portraitist, seems to have been transmitted as a mystery.

  • Taking the time, approaching the model with gentleness, getting acquainted, taking an interest in her: here is the secret of a photographic practice in the process of disappearance, when it is a question of capturing the depth of a human being or of a moment. It is the essential link between the model and the photographer that Sonia Sieff is precisely seeking because according to her, it is essential in nude and fashion photography: “above everything, I seek human qualities. Then I need something to draw my attention: a gesture, a laugh, an attitude … I seek life and not perfection, « she says. Her first book contains 155 images produced over a period of four years, outside the fashion sessions or magazines orders.

  • A personal work, a manifesto for the natural woman in a world that plastifies them, “the story of a stalk between long evening discussions and dredge on the beach”, exhibited in Paris and published for the very first time. “There are many anecdotes about this book, travels, laughters, mistakes, and fortunately, successes! “. Certainly.

  • Book: Les Françaises, 155 photographs by Sonia Sieff, 176 pages by Rizzoli New York editions. Released in March 2017

Exhibition: twenty-five photographs taken from the book, at the A Galerie, from March 1st to May 1st of 2017, 4 rue Léonce Raynaud, 75116 Paris
