THE FIELD OF MUY

Françoise Spiekermeier

Contemporary Sculpture Park
Invitation to an intimate encounter with the finest works of contemporary art in the world.

It is at Muy, in the hinterland of St. Tropez or St. Raphael, an hour’s drive of Grasse. It is a rocky path that winds through the hills. It invites to dive into the heart of wild nature of Provence, dry, covered with fragrant plant species, to meet with, one-on-one, one after the other, works of art, among the most important of our time.

  • one of the beautiful contemporary sculpture parks in France

The particular affection of the Parisian gallery owner Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand to the work of Niki de Saint-Phalle whom he is one of the most ardent admirers, is probably not unrelated to the creation of one of the beautiful contemporary sculpture parks in France whose charm attracts collectors worldwide since its opening in July 2015. One can indeed help in mooning on the dirt path that winds between the hills of the area, think the Tarot garden in Tuscany, where the sculptor and painter Niki de Saint-Phalle materialized one of his youthful dreams, itself inspired by Gaudi and the factor Horse “represent human beauty (…) without any intermediary no museum, no gallery “… in its own way, Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand carries a piece of this dream, collecting the creu of the intact nature of the artists he likes is to say, a set of works that mark, such headlights, the world of contemporary art, to give to see, to discover the beauty of intellectual works in their nakedness.

  • It seeks to bring the thrill of discovery

High heels should be avoided. A pair of sandals or sneakers will do. And also a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, a bottle of mineral water, essential to avoid dehydration. It is said that the visit lasts an hour … that the loop will be quickly closed. But no. This does not happen like that. We must prepare. We are not here in the air conditioning of a gallery or museum. If the villa that sits at the entrance area, with its large windows and terrace is a cozy house, a saving refuge, experience that comes to you is an odyssey, a journey where the body is your only vehicle. It is a little a melee which is to be expected in confrontation with nature and the works put on the course, carefully sown as white pebbles. “What we sought, says Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand is this confrontation between the works of the mind and nature itself. Some works are sometimes very advanced intellectually as Sol Lewitt, great minimalist artist, and Carlos Cruz-Diez, large kinetic artist, and Francisco Sobrino; others are more romantic as Wang Du, Claude Lalanne and François-Xavier Lalanne, Others urban works that can perfectly find architecture like that of Keith Haring. It seeks to bring the thrill of discovery: the works are encountered on the way, we are not prepared to see them. This surprise is very important. Thus each work interrogates the visitor in the power it contains, in support of nature or in opposition to nature, respecting each other, but in opposition. “

  • The works in nature

Nature has a say in art. Admittedly, and this is necessary here as an evidence. Not only the meaning of the work itself is revealed, but in addition, nature reveals the depth of individual perception face at work. It clarifies the heart, opens the senses. Restores confidence. “Collectors are discovering them in a setting where they have never seen them. In a new framework for them, a place where nature is very strong, where we worked on how to introduce the works in nature instead of as is most of the time, bend nature to perspective works. There they did the opposite. We will ask the nature almost kindly accept work offered to him, “exclaims Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand. The pieces are chosen by porosity, randomly fairs, meetings, various exhibitions that will also make Edward, son of Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand, artistic director of the estate, accompanied by Simon Lamunière, curator since 2016 this season . thus, a piece of Dan Colen, an American artist who appropriates the codes of Street Culture and Pop Art, noticed on a show, joined the Domaine du Muy, lent by the gallery Gagossian in the context of relationships with non-represented by JGM gallery in Paris artists. “One way for us to work with major international galleries and open doors to new artists,” he says. On the tape the way, forty works: the one permanent, the other passage, the unique one, the other built on site by the artist (as 128 squares and Their demonstration, cinder block wall and painting done in situ Claudia Comte in 2015, Swiss artist working in Berlin). The opening is required. Impossible is not French.

  • Discover single pieces

This 2016 edition, as an excellent vintage and assembles ten new integrated parts to the course, including the single piece of Dan Graham (or Sculpture Pavilion? 2015) Retouched Image of Chinese artist Wang Du (an elephant raising a car, another unique piece made in 2015), the islets, three seats in steel and aluminum of french architect Claude Parent, father of the theory of the Oblique Function that sets a new report based on ground instability and imbalance, or Peter Regli, Swiss artist living in New York, known for its installation of Land Art with a teddy sculpture in black and white marble, another unique piece (titled HR 324_10 Teddy wBase sculpture, 2014). Not to mention the work of Tomas Saraseno, Cloud Cities / Air-Port-City 4 Modules Metal (2010_2011) single monumental work created by the Argentinean artist born in 1973 in Tucuman, who “lives and works on and beyond the Earth “.

  • An introductory approach to sculpture in the life of nature

Thus, in a simple, obvious way, the Domaine du Muy sets itself as a reference in an introductory approach to sculpture in the life of nature and architecture.
